Coffee consumption hits two-decade high - Spring 2022 National Coffee Data Trends report

According to private consumer polling just provided by the National Coffee Association (NCA), coffee consumption has skyrocketed to a two-decade high as Americans brew up new post-Covid routines.

Coffee is currently consumed by 66 percent of Americans every day, more than any other beverage including tap water, which is an increase of over 14 percent since January 2021, the greatest growth since NCA began recording statistics.

Americans have increased their coffee drinking away from home by 8% since January 2021, according to the Spring 2022 National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) study issued by Dig Insights on behalf of the NCA.

At home, coffee consumption is still higher than it was before the pandemic. In January 2020, 84 percent of coffee users said they had coffee at home in the previous day, up from 80 percent in January 2020.

Since the commencement of the pandemic, consumption of espresso-based beverages, which are frequently prepared away from home, has increased by 30%, showing both recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and fresh growth.

"Given decades of independent scientific evidence that coffee drinkers live longer than people who never drink coffee," NCA president and CEO William "Bill" Murray said, "it's fitting to see America's top beverage emerge from Covid-19 more popular than ever at home, on the go, in the office, and in coffee shops across the country."

The following are some of the most important NCDT findings:

• Consumption of specialty coffee has reached a five-year high. 43 percent of coffee drinkers pick specialty coffee, up 20% from January 2021.
• The most popular coffee beverages in America are cappuccinos and lattes, which are closely followed by plain espresso and cafe mocha.
• A drip coffee maker is used by 41% of coffee drinkers, followed by single-cup systems (27%), cold brewing (9%), and espresso machines (9%).
