A coffee drip bag is the easiest way to make a proper cup of specialty coffee without any equipment. Hang it on a mug, pour hot water through it, and a few minutes later you have a filter coffee that tastes far closer to a café pour-over than anything instant. This guide covers how drip bags work, how to brew them well, and which drip bags are worth buying in the UAE right now.

The short version

  • What they are: single-serve pour-overs. Around 12 g of ground coffee in a paper filter that hangs on the rim of your cup.
  • How to brew: water just off the boil, a small pour to bloom the coffee, then 150 to 190 ml in total in slow pours. Two to three minutes from start to finish.
  • Best for: offices, travel, hotel rooms, camping and anyone who does not own a grinder.
  • What they cost: boxes on BeanBurds run from AED 56 to AED 116. A Cosmic Garden box of eight works out at AED 12 a cup.

What is a coffee drip bag?

A drip bag is a small paper filter pre-filled with ground coffee, with two cardboard hangers on its sides. You open the hangers, hook them over the rim of your cup and pour hot water through the coffee. The water passes through the grounds and drips into the cup, exactly like a tiny pour-over. That is the key difference from a tea bag or a coffee steeping bag, which sit in the water.

Each bag comes sealed in its own sachet, so the coffee stays protected until the moment you open it.

How to brew a drip bag, step by step

  1. Heat your water. Aim for 92 to 96°C. If your kettle has no temperature setting, let it rest for about 30 seconds after it boils.
  2. Open the bag. Tear open the sachet, tear along the top of the filter, unfold the paper hangers and hook them over your cup. A taller mug works best because the bottom of the bag stays clear of the coffee.
  3. Bloom. Pour about 30 to 40 ml of water, just enough to wet all the grounds, and wait 30 seconds. Fresh coffee bubbles here as it releases gas.
  4. Pour the rest slowly. Add another 120 to 150 ml in two or three slow, circular pours, letting each one drain before the next. Do not fill the bag to the brim, or it can overflow or tip.
  5. Remove and swirl. Once the last pour has drained, lift the bag out, give the cup a swirl and drink.

Tips for a better cup

  • Keep the bag out of the coffee. If the bottom of the filter sits in the brewed coffee, it starts steeping and can pull out bitterness. Use a taller mug, or lift the bag between pours.
  • Change strength with water, not time. For a stronger cup, stop at about 150 ml. For a lighter one, go up to 190 ml.
  • Use filtered or bottled water. Your cup is almost entirely water, and very hard tap water flattens the flavour.
  • Do not squeeze the bag. Pressing it pushes fine particles and bitterness into the cup.
  • Pour gently. A gooseneck kettle makes it easier, but any kettle works if you pour slowly.
  • Adding milk? Brew with about 120 ml of water so the coffee holds its own, and pick a chocolatey coffee such as the Brazil Alta Mogiana below.

Iced drip bag coffee

Put about 80 g of ice in a glass, hang the bag on top and brew with 100 to 120 ml of hot water, poured in the same slow stages. The coffee chills the moment it hits the ice, so it stays bright and fresh. Fruity coffees like the Ethiopians below are especially good this way, and it is the best way to drink a drip bag in a UAE summer.

Drip bags vs instant coffee vs capsules

Drip bags Instant coffee Capsules
What is inside Ground specialty coffee Dried coffee extract Ground coffee in a sealed pod
What you need A cup and hot water A cup and hot water A compatible machine
Style of coffee Filter coffee, like a pour-over Soluble coffee Espresso-style shots
Time 2 to 3 minutes Under a minute Under a minute

If you have no machine at all, drip bags are the real upgrade from instant: the same convenience with proper ground coffee. If you already own a capsule machine, our capsules and drip bags page has both.

Where drip bags make the most sense

  • At the office. No shared machine to clean, and everyone picks their own coffee. Keep a few different boxes in the drawer.
  • Travelling. They weigh almost nothing and fit in a laptop bag. A hotel kettle is all you need; let the water rest a moment after it boils.
  • Camping and desert trips. A kettle on a camping stove does the job. Pack the used bags out with you.
  • As a gift. A box of seven or eight bags is an easy way to introduce someone to specialty coffee without asking them to buy any gear.

Storing drip bags in UAE heat

Because the coffee inside is already ground, heat and humidity age it faster than whole beans. Keep boxes in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sun, never leave them in a car in summer, and brew each bag as soon as you open its sachet. Check the date on the box and drink them within a few months for the best flavour.

Frequently asked questions

How do you use a coffee drip bag?

Open the sachet, unfold the paper hangers and hook them over your cup. Pour about 30 to 40 ml of water at 92 to 96°C to bloom the coffee for 30 seconds, then slowly pour another 120 to 150 ml. Lift the bag out and drink.

Do you steep a drip bag like a tea bag?

No. A drip bag is a pour-over, so the water should pass through the coffee and into the cup. If the bag sits in the brewed coffee it keeps extracting, which can make the cup bitter.

How much water should I use with a drip bag?

For a 12 g bag, about 150 to 190 ml in total. Stop nearer 150 ml for a stronger cup, or go up to 190 ml for a lighter one.

Can you reuse a coffee drip bag?

It is not worth it. The first brew takes out most of the flavour, so a second cup comes out thin and watery.

Are drip bags better than instant coffee?

For flavour, yes. Drip bags hold real ground specialty coffee rather than dried coffee extract, so they taste much closer to a café filter coffee. They take two to three minutes instead of thirty seconds.

Can I make iced coffee with a drip bag?

Yes. Hang the bag over a glass with about 80 g of ice and brew with 100 to 120 ml of hot water in the same slow stages. Fruity coffees are especially good this way.

How long do coffee drip bags last?

Check the date on the box and drink them within a few months for the best flavour. Once you open a sachet, brew it straight away, because the coffee inside is already ground.

Where can I buy coffee drip bags in the UAE?

You can order drip bags from Cartel, Emirati Coffee, Cosmic Garden and Koonoo on BeanBurds, delivered across the UAE.
